To be honest the United States has got one of the most effective and arguably the most comprehensive export control law in the world. The fact remains however the objectives of this control are far removed from the essence of international trade and development. In other words what this actually means is that, the US export control laws as much as they have helped to create and effective trade system their objectives have been very different. In a nut shell the reason why the United States stated regulating exports is because of security and stability reasons.
One of the objectives of export control has been to limit or literally restrict access of sensitive US weapons technology. The rationale behind this approach has been motivated by the widely held assumption that the United States is arguably the most potential terrorist target in the world. With this point well considered regulatory authorities and enforcement agencies of the US export control laws have been very keen to ensure that no sensitive weapons and technology gets in to the hands of terrorist movements and extremists. The good thing is that such an approach has been in the best interest of global security in general.
Aside from controlling sensitive weaponry the United State export control has also been set to achieve regional stability not just around it but to the world. In essence the United States has and can sanction exports to different countries in case such exports will undermine regional stability of the countries involved. In most cases this exports include arms and basic utility material under rebel or anarchy controlled lands. Under certain clauses in the US export control laws the government of the United States in conjunction with international organization can sanction and create trade embargos on certain regions just to maintain peace.
Well as much as such laws have been very effective in promoting a favorable trade environment, the reality is that their sole objectives are far removed from trade itself. As for economic sanctions and trade embargos the United States uses its export power to further the best interest of its people just like it is in Iran. However US export control laws are very dynamic and can change considerably over a period of time. With all said and done, the consensus by many people is that regulation with such laws is necessary.
